If you ever want to visit Fiji get there as quickly as you can. It is changing fast and the traditional tribal chief system is almost titular only on the main islands already. There is only one way to really get the feel for the way Fiji wasand that is to go to one fo the most remote islands. 5-star private islands are a dime a dozen now. Instead, I recommend going to Ono and staying at Jona’s Paradise. Traditional Fijian thatched huts are on the most beautiful beach you’ll find. They will cook for you and it is scrumptous. There is no TV, no phone, just paradise. For a more civilized adventure go to Beqa Island and stay at Lalati resort. Spa, restuarant, scuba, pool, AC. Still, they can arrange a terrific visit to a lovely village. There is terrific sea kayaking and snorkeling in a large mangrove nearby. BEWARE of any village that gets visitors more than 6 times a year. Whiel they are fine to visit during the day, I would NOT recommend staying there overnight.

New Zealand tour companies are running wekkly adult visits to many remote islands and, unfortunately, many of the visitors are looking for a “good time”. Because of that many of the island men and women are aggressively willing to trade intimacy for almost anything and will approach even young teens with offers.

This is one of the parts of the world that is westernizing VERY quickly. Get there while you can still feel the real Fiji.
